This is by far my favorite time of the year. The wonderfully vivid colors of fall have given way to the haunting barrenness of winter and the realization that another year approaches an end. From my window, I look upon a majestic willow oak tree stretching upward, bare and dormant. In the spring, I will marvel at its return to vibrant lushness. I am freshly reminded of the rhythm of life and the cycle of decay and renewal. I’d like to imagine that I am a bit wiser this year than last as my appreciation for life in all of its manifestations becomes ever keener.
The sense of goodwill and good cheer occasioned by the holidays recall for me warm and comforting memories. I am, however, aware that for many this is a sad, lonely and depressing time. In fact, the ever-present and all-consuming focus on an idealized version of happy holidays often reinforces the sadness many feel. Perhaps the pursuit of happiness is illusive and we are meant to look inward to find our joy.
Many years ago, my dear friend and colleague, Betty Parker-Smith, introduced me to her annual holiday letter. She wrote these lovely, exquisitely worded letters that were gifts of wisdom and perspective. Over the years, I shamelessly appropriated the practice and wrote my own holiday letter. However, Bettye’s letter, always eagerly anticipated, remains the standard.
This year, for those who found and followed my blog, thank you for joining me on my writing journey.
This is my simple message this holiday season.
In 2015, I offer these heartfelt wishes for you…
The knowledge that you are kept constantly in the Loving, Protective and Healing Grace of your God, however He or She is imagined by you..
The peace of a quiet spirit…
Good health and a strong and robust body to move gracefully through 2015…
A passionate touch, a frisky night and a satisfied morning…
Luminous days of clear blue skies and misty, moonlit nights…
A glimpse of the future through the eyes of a child…
Silk, satin, velvet, linen and voile cotton against your skin…
Your favorite foods without the calories…
Water, scents and oils when frazzled nerves need soothing…
Lilacs, tulips, roses and irises to fill the air around you…
Fearlessness in the face of uncertainty…
The cumulative and collective strength of your ancestors who opened the road for your path…
Wisdom and the simple knowledge that within you is a spark of the Divine…
The courage to live your unique truth without apology, to jealously guard your joy and to boldly declare your right to be simply you…
Another year to flower in the majesty of your special gift…
A spectacular 2015…
